Question 1

What does the total on a collision-repair estimate include?

Accepted Answer

The total is the estimate’s current arithmetic for the operations, parts, labor, paint or materials, sublet services, and applicable tax or fees listed in that version. A deductible or payment responsibility may be shown separately. It describes the documented scope at that point; it is not necessarily a final invoice or a statement of who will pay each amount.

Question 2

Why might an estimate change after disassembly or closer inspection?

Accepted Answer

Some information may become available only after parts are removed or the repair area is examined more closely. A shop may document newly observed conditions, a part change, or another operation in a revised estimate or supplement. That possibility does not confirm hidden damage in a particular vehicle. Ask the shop what changed, why it changed, and which lines are still being reviewed.

Question 3

What is a supplemental estimate, and how do I read its status?

Accepted Answer

A supplement is an update that adds or changes documented work or parts after the earlier estimate. Read the versions together and compare their dates, line descriptions, and stated reasons. Words such as “pending,” “if necessary,” or “after teardown” signal that an item may still need clarification or review; they do not by themselves mean it is approved or included in the current total. Ask the shop or insurer who has reviewed each changed line and what amount is current.

Question 4

What do labor hours and labor rates mean on an estimate?

Accepted Answer

Labor hours are time units assigned to a listed operation, and the rate is the amount applied to those units. Body, paint or refinish, mechanical, and diagnostic work may have separate categories or rates. Estimate hours describe an operation, not calendar time at the shop and not a diagnosis. Ask which steps the line includes and which rate applies.

Question 5

What do OEM, aftermarket, recycled/LKQ, and remanufactured parts mean?

Accepted Answer

OEM generally refers to a part made to the vehicle maker’s specification; aftermarket parts are made by another company; recycled or used parts come from another vehicle and may be labeled LKQ (“like kind and quality”); and remanufactured parts are used components rebuilt through a process that can vary. The label alone does not settle a part’s fit, condition, warranty, approval, safety, or claim coverage. Ask for the specific part number, source, warranty, and approval status.

Question 6

Can I upload an estimate photo or document?

Accepted Answer

The photo flow accepts JPEG, PNG, and WebP images; it does not accept PDFs. An active Repair Advisor pass or subscription is required before photo OCR. The image is resized in your browser for that OCR request and is not saved as an uploaded file. You can review and correct the recognized estimate wording before continuing.

Question 7

Does an estimate determine the final repair cost or insurance coverage?

Accepted Answer

No. Repair Advisor explains estimate wording; it does not calculate or estimate repair costs, determine insurance coverage, or replace your repair shop, insurer, or appraiser. An estimate records proposed work and estimated charges for the scope documented in that version, and that scope may change. Ask the repair shop about the work and final charges, and ask your insurer or appraiser about coverage, payment, and approval.

Question 8

Can an estimate tell me whether my vehicle is safe or which repairs it needs?

Accepted Answer

No. An estimate is paperwork about proposed or documented operations; reading it cannot determine a vehicle’s condition or safety. Repair Advisor explains estimate language for educational context. It does not diagnose vehicle damage, assess safety, or recommend repairs. Ask the repair shop, vehicle maker, insurer, appraiser, or another qualified professional about vehicle-specific repair and safety questions.
